Somerton Cubs Entertain at Wessex House

Very proud of all who took part in making this a really succesful evening. The Cubs but on  a show including WW1 songs, Carols, magic tricks, violin and Cornet recital, world flags quiz and much more.  The Cubs came up with all the ideas themselves and they were treated to a drink and a chocolate as a thank you.

It was such a success that we will be developing more links with Wessex House into 2015.

Nice write up in the Western Gazette with picture, see link below

Autumn Cub Camp 2014

We had a wonderful autumn camp with the Cubs arriving at Huish Woods Scout campsite Friday evening while the sun shone.  Once everyone had settled into their tents we had a light snack and then played games in the dark.

The next morning the rain came down but this did not stop us having lots of fun making woodland creatures, lots of snails, antelope and even spiders were made from wood and twigs.

We then managed to find wood dry enough to light fires where we cooked sausages and baked apples which we ate for lunch.

In the afternoon we identified trees from their leaves and fruit, found insects and made a survey of the local wood as part of the Naturalist badge.

Sunday morning we took part in the Zip wire and followed the Orienteering course around the campsite.  All too soon it was time to pack up and go home, but everyone had a wonderful time and I am sure we will be back next year.

Cub Kayaking

The Cubs had a great time Kayaking at Sutton Bingham reservoir to start off the new term..  Everyone had a great time with some getting wetter than others!

Summer 2014 Cub Camp

Summer Camp started on Friday evening at Buddens Scout campsite with lots of excitement which meant the Cubs took some time to get to sleep.  Then the thunder and lightning and torrential rain started!  Everyone stayed dry overnight and started the day looking forward to lots of fun.

Saturday morning started off as planned building rafts, giving the Cubs a chance to use the square lashing skills we had been practicing before camp but just as we were about to go on the water, the heavens opened again!  This meant we had an early lunch and once the weather cleared we got our rafts on the water and they both floated!  Lots of games followed with who could stand up and do head , shoulders, knees and toes on their raft.  Well done to Mark and Ruben who were brilliant!

Finally the sun came out and we were able to get dry and after supper the chance to have our own world cup football match and then off to bed.

Sunday morning the sun shone and everyone had a chance to have a go on the Climbing wall with three Cubs being able to touch the ceiling of the Climbing barn, then off to abseiling.  Well done to everyone who really challenged themselves and had a go at everything.

Looking forward to Autumn camp in October for even more adventures.

Funday 2014

The Beaver and Cub sections visited Woodhouse Park Bristol for the annual Funday on the 21st June.

The group had a lot of fun with lots of different activities from Craft, Fun Fair, Assault course, water slide, Laser Tag and Go carting and lots more!

Will definitely be back next year!  The video gives you an insight into the day with some of the Somerton Cubs being interviewed.

Visit to @ Bristol

The Cubs visited @ Bristol to complete their Astronomers badge.

The day started with a demonstration of different fuels to use to launch a rocket, with hydrogen filled balloons lifting weights and being set alight. Lots of loud bangs.

We also made rockets which were launched a planets to discover a interesting fact.  We also learnt about the night sky in the Planetarium.

We also had time to explore @ Bristol and have lots of fun before returning home.

Autumn Cub Camp 2013

The Cubs arrived on a very wet Friday night at Huish Woods Scout campsite near Taunton, very excited about the weekend ahead.

The morning was spent on the aerial runway, followed by collecting wood and lighting fires and against the odds we found wood that was dry enough to burn,.  The cubs then cooked lunch on the fires of Sausages and chocolate bananas.

After some free time playing in the forest they went around the orienteering course with some signs being more difficult to find than others but all managed to complete the course,

The day ended toasting marshmallows on a fire and drinking hot chocolate.

Sunday morning the Cubs took part in Archery then we all helped pack up the site and the very tired but happy cubs went home, looking forward to doing it all again next year,

Brownsea Island Visit

Brownsea Island is the birthplace of scouting where Baden Powell had his first camp in 1907.  The Beavers and Cubs all set off early Saturday morning to catch the first ferry from Poole Quay to Brownsea Island.

When we arrived we had a walk to the other end of the Island to take part in the Survival challenge, which is one of  the actual activities on the original  Baden Powell camp.  It was nice to get into the woods which was much cooler where we built a shelter, camp fire ( but not actually light it) and built a tripod to hang the cooking pot.    Everyone really enjoyed it and was one of the highlights of the day.

In the afternoon we took part in playing games which were also part of the original camp, from throwing pine cones to knock tin cans down, a race to see which group could put a tent up the fastest.

On the return ferry ride we had a tour of Poole harbour before catching the coach back to Somerton.
